about

“Rearview” is about a night we drove up to Northern Michigan to see Northern Lights. We had clear skies most of the drive up, we brought a blanket, we got some craft beers, and we settled on this super, super dark little beach. As soon as we got settled, the clouds rolled in ruined our plans. It seemed like a metaphor for our whole stay in Michigan and me trying to make a career of music - like, it’s just not going to be happening the way I wanted it to happen and I have to drop it and stop worrying about it all working out. On top of the family deaths, in trying to take life into my own hands and make big decisions and pursue big goals, I had just completely lost myself. I realized I have to come up with a new way to live because I had changed and my family had changed and the world had changed, and luckily I don’t have to do it alone. I felt really sad but really happy and relieved at the same time; and realizing how much I’ve been at the mercy of fate and my own nature, I was just overwhelmed, so I started to get a little teary eyed. My wife thought I was beating myself up about it all and and she told me I was probably just still overwhelmed by losing my mom, and I thought maybe that could be true but I was also just feeling really humbled by life. And we just sat there in silence for awhile in the dark, listening to the waves and the sound of beers clinking in the sand. It was kind of haunting. When I finally played the song to my wife we both burst into tears because something about the memory of that night still touches a nerve. It’s my favorite song on the record even though it’s the most personal and probably the least accessible to anyone else.
