We were hanging out with our friends and their kids in their back yard on a beautiful Sunday evening. And it was really idyllic, and the kids were playing and the grown-ups were chatting and sipping wine. But every once in awhile my friends would, as if by instinct, look over at the kids and yell “be careful” or “don’t do that, you’re going to hurt yourself”. And I started thinking about how psychotic and dangerous the world is, and how we are all subject to a lot of danger and pain, and the kids even more so because they don’t know anything. It’s kind of an incredible task we all take on that seems like a combination of a state of joy as well as tension - protecting and raising and nurturing each other in the face of all the chaos going in the world, and if we take it seriously we learn to become poised, and on-guard, and even dangerous ourselves in a way, in order to be able to keep the people we care about safe.
